As the summer heat gives way to fall, there are lots of activities to do during one of the prettiest seasons in Utah. Whether you are new to the state or a Utah lifer, you can enjoy plenty of nearby adventures all throughout the year — especially on the weekends.

Explore one of the many breathtaking trails along the Wasatch Front or sample the food and festivities at a local fair or festival. Whatever you prefer, here are several options if you’re looking for a good local hike or a family-friendly event to enjoy on the weekends.

Hiking

Lace-up your boots, grab the water, sunscreen and granola bars and get ready to marvel at the beauty of these local trails.

Neff’s Canyon

This dog-friendly canyon trail is an absolute gem, heading up into the hills from an upscale neighborhood on the east bench of the Salt Lake Valley. It starts out as a service road in some low-lying scrub brush but soon gains altitude as the trail narrows to a dirt path and ascends to cooler heights. You’ll cross a lovely stream and top out in a meadow with a decidedly alpine feel. You can turn around and reverse course whenever you run out of time — but if you can make it all the way to the wildflower meadow, you’ll certainly be glad you did.

Silver Lake

If you’re ready for a challenge that will end in an epic reward, this spot needs to be on your bucket list. Silver Lake Trail in Utah is a dazzling destination. This particular trek lets you visit not just one, but two magical lagoons for double the reward after a long climb.

Lake Blanche

Starting from a trailhead halfway up Big Cottonwood Canyon, Lake Blanche is hands-down one of the prettiest places in the Wasatch Mountains. A robust three miles of uphill walking, the trail winds its way up a side canyon until it reaches an exquisite lake surrounded by dramatic vaulted peaks. Plan on taking plenty of time to bask in the lake shore’s beauty. Also, you’ll need space in your phone for approximately three hundred photos.

Gatherings

If you prefer something slightly less athletic than trekking up the mountain, check out these upcoming events in the Salt Lake area.

Snowbird’s Oktoberfest 2022

Whether you’re of German descent or not, you’ll be sure to have a great time at Snowbird’s annual Oktoberfest. A family-friendly event with activities, food, and plenty of brews for the drinking crowd, the festival begins in mid-August and lasts through mid-October. With thousands of visitors each year, it’s one of Utah’s largest festivals. Admission is free and the event runs from noon to 6 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, including Labor Day.

Family Art Fair

Got an artist in the family? Come paint and party at the Visual Art Institute’s Family Art Fair in Salt Lake on Aug. 27. Add your mark to a giant mural and enjoy food, treats, music, caricatures, face painting and balloons. You won’t want to miss it!

2022 Avenues Street Fair

Held every year on the second Saturday in September, the Avenues Street Fair celebrates the unique and eclectic history of the neighborhood, which is one of the oldest in Salt Lake. The Greater Avenues Community Council chooses a different street to highlight each year and this time the fair will be between G and L Streets. It’s free and open to anyone who wants to experience local talent and artistry with live entertainment and local food vendors. The fair will be Saturday, Sept. 10, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Give one or all of these activities a try and you’ll soon learn that being bored in Utah will never be a problem.
